Three Years and Counting!

Friday, September 12 was the third anniversary of my bowel surgery! Yeepah!
Why is this so exciting? The major reason is since about two months after the surgery I have
been completely medication free. A big deal. A really big deal. For someone who
has had to be on prednisone for more than half their life this is a huge accomplishment.
Prednisone is a nasty anti-inflammatory drug that does a good job at what it is
supposed to do but it really has some ugly side effects. Such as:
Mooning (can you say fat face?)
Throughout my "heavy dose" days of prednisone I had a very round, very large face. People would often ask me if I had just had my wisdom teeth pulled.
No.
Other things that were said to me were:
"If I poked your cheeks with a pin, would they pop?"
"What happened?"
"You look like a lollipop. Your head is the top and your body is the stick."
These are just a few. Gee whiz, it is a freakin' miracle that I don't have body dysmorphia or something like it. I was really traumatized.
What they say is true though I guess. If it doesn't kill you, it will make you stronger. OK.
Anyway......three years later and so far so good on being prednisone free.
Oh what a feeling!

Post-Op and all drugged up. I had this one nurse who
was so cute. She called herself the candy lady when she brought
me my pain meds.

My pretty belly after three different incisions. They took
out five inches of my guts in total: three of my
large intestine and two of my small intestine.

What happens when your incision becomes infected. I
walked around with a recut gut for about two weeks. They
had to cut me back open, squeeze the pus out (without ANY anesthetic)
clean it out, and stuff it with gauze so it could drain and slowly heal up on
its own. Holy cow I have never swore so much in my life as I did when they
cut me back open. I called my Doc some real choice names as well. Oops...

So glad that's all over. I hope for many happy non-surgery years to come.

WOW!!! I think I could have gone the rest of my life without seeing that last picture:). Just kidding. I am glad that you are doing so much better. I remember how traumatic it was for you when we were younger to deal with the face issue. I am glad that it is a thing of the past!

AWESOME!!! That was so great, thanks for telling me to check out your blog. I can not believe I almost missed one of the most interesting things I have seen in many months. Your husband is major mad sick for taking them, though! But so cool!!
